Commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Justice (EDIJ)

As the daughter of Haitian immigrants to the United States/Massachusetts, I embody the economic, social, and educational disparities of a nationality and ethnic group that has been oppressed by systemic and structural racism and colonialism. My socialization as a child of Haitian immigrants, given the backdrop of the “Haitian boat people and Haitians have AIDS” xenophobic sentiments of the 1980’s, has had an enduring effect on how I view myself in my environments and in relation to those I engage. I understand how my cultural contexts have influenced how I live and has shaped my life within a global community. The juxtaposition of my dual-identity, Haitian-American, reveals both a privileged and marginalized positionality; it underscores the tension at the crux of my insider/outsider status that represents my ethnic and national backgrounds. My lived experiences have contributed to my conceptualization of “EDIJ” and how it is operationalized in my practice; research and scholarship, teaching, leadership, and service. Thus, I embody an EDIJ mindset in the following ways: 1. Interrogating my positionality and adopting critical reflexive practices, 2. Fostering a sense of belonging, 3. Advocating for justice and equity, and 4. Leveraging my privilege.
